The old industrial corridor, redeveloped hard over the last fifteen years. The Rail Trail runs its length beside the Blue Line, and most of what you buy is new-build. Breweries and restaurants fill the converted warehouses.
South End is the former rail and mill corridor just south of Uptown, rebuilt since the LYNX Blue Line opened in 2007. What you buy here is mostly new: condos in mid-rise buildings, townhomes on infill lots and a very large apartment inventory, many of them sitting over or beside restaurants and breweries in converted warehouses.
For a condo or townhome, the association matters as much as the unit. Ask for the budget, the reserve study and the meeting minutes, and look for special assessments, insurance changes or pending litigation before due diligence ends. Check parking too: some buildings deed or assign a space and some rent them separately. And spend an evening on the block, because rail, patio and event noise vary a lot from one building to the next.
The Blue Line and the Rail Trail run the length of the neighborhood, with stations at Carson, Bland Street, East/West Boulevard and New Bern, and Uptown is a few minutes north. I-77 and I-277 are on the western and northern edges.
